Tofino, British Columbia

By Porter Lang

You feel the rainforest before you see it. The road in from Port Alberni crosses the island’s spine and drops through hours of old growth, cedar and hemlock crowding so close the highway feels carved rather than built. By the time you reach the coast, you’ve already left most of what “Vancouver Island” usually means behind.

Tofino sits at the edge of Clayoquot Sound, which UNESCO designated a biosphere reserve in 2000. Ask locally before you assume a trail or beach is open to everyone.

Sephari doesn’t yet have sourced, checked profiles of makers working this coast — expect that to change as the region’s small studios and cooperatives come into focus. Until then, this is a place best visited slowly: rainforest in the morning, water in the afternoon, and a healthy respect for whichever the weather decides to bring.
